Luyando has started a feeding programme at Luyando Community School. Every morning before classes the children are served a nutritious porridge. It has been made possible by the generous support of Mary's Meals - an initiative which sets up school feeding projects in communities where poverty blocks children from gaining an education.
Mary's Meals is currently feeding over 300,000 children daily in Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Mary’s Meals donate funds for the food and provide training and support to the volunteers who cook and serve the daily meals. These volunteers, usually parents, are vital to the work of Mary’s Meals. Through their commitment the whole community becomes involved.
To gain an education children first need to attend school and then be given the opportunity to learn. Offering a feeding programme is a great incentive for the children to come to school. Poor children are far more likely to become ill. They are also frequently needed by their families for chores and so often miss a lot of school which means they fall behind in their work.
Our teacher has said there is now 100% attendance and that the children are not hungry in class so can concentrate so much better on learning. It is very difficult to concentrate when hungry, it causes tiredness, headaches, inability to concentrate and irritability. The breakfast will remove the pain of hunger, leaving children free to turn their attention to their class work.
The project has not only provided much needed food and nutrients for the children but is also a great source of hope for the entire community.
